Oppenheimer ★★★★½

A film about the inventor of one of the world’s most feared weapons. Leave it to Christopher Nolan. His interest in history and storytelling is an ideal combination. With Oppenheimer, Nolan once again presents an unforgettable film. In over 3 hours, a story is told that took place years ago but is still relevant today.

The American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, also known as the “father of the atomic bomb,” takes center stage. As is typical of Nolan, this is not a chronological film about the creation of the dreaded bomb. Oppenheimer’s entire tumultuous life unfolds. He recounts it himself during an FBI interrogation to restore his security clearance.

Opposite this storyline is the American politician Lewis Strauss. The man who previously revoked Oppenheimer’s security clearance. And the man who aspires to become a minister in Eisenhower’s cabinet. Oppenheimer’s eternal rival, who made Oppenheimer’s career very difficult with deceitful games. But the truth always comes to light.

Genius in Oppenheimer

Director Christopher Nolan already has a notable body of work to his name. With titles like Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, he has repeatedly proven himself as a filmmaker. And with Oppenheimer, he manages to repeat this feat.

Not just a story about the creation of the atomic bomb and the Manhattan Project that Oppenheimer led. Nolan has chosen to focus on the interrogations of both Oppenheimer and Strauss. An original perspective on an event that changed the future forever.

Bad guy or good guy

If your nickname is the “father of the atomic bomb,” it doesn’t sound very positive these days. Yet, Nolan’s script ensures that lead actor Cillian Murphy can portray Oppenheimer as both a good guy and a bad guy. And the actor does so with great skill.

For three hours, Murphy manages to captivate the audience as both the young physics student and the mature, renowned scientist. He is, of course, aided by a cast that is truly remarkable. With Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh, Nolan has assembled a stellar ensemble. Expectations for Oppenheimer are high with all these big names. But they have been more than exceeded. This, in part, has led the audience to discover the film. Thanks in part to the spontaneous marketing campaign in collaboration with Barbie. Two films that occupy opposite ends of the film spectrum but were released simultaneously and both resonate with a large audience.
