Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) ★★★★

The successful Spanish Netflix series has come to an end after five seasons. In Money Heist, the gang led by El Professor carried out impossible heists. Their masterful plans held the entire world in its grip. The series is, therefore, one of the most-watched non-English language shows on Netflix. An achievement not easily attained. And rightly so! ‘La Casa’ has it all. Suspense, action, romance, friendship, and a very talented cast.

In seasons 1 and 2, the gang embarked on a mission to rob the Royal Mint. It resulted in two almost perfect seasons. The story of the Royal Mint concluded with season 2. But there was more to come. Netflix couldn’t let the success of “Money Heist” pass it by. The first two seasons were co-produced by the Spanish network Antena 3 and aired there. For the subsequent seasons, Netflix took the reins. Not only the Mint fell victim to the gang; the National Bank of Spain (Banco de España) also suffered.

A slightly less meticulously planned heist was executed in the last 3 seasons. All the familiar characters returned, even those who didn’t survive the first heist. But that’s what flashbacks are for! The final three seasons might lack the element of surprise that the first two had (it’s a repeat of earlier success), yet the fifth season manages to impress where seasons 3 and 4 couldn’t always do so.

The main characters named after cities managed to capture the hearts of the audience as ‘bad guys.’ However, that doesn’t mean the favorites are spared. This became clear in season 4 when Nairobi, after being brought back to life with much fanfare following a gunshot wound, caught a fatal bullet just one episode later. No mercy! And that’s precisely what the first half of season 5 continued with.

Chaos Unleashed

The first two seasons didn’t go smoothly for the heist at the House of Paper (‘La Casa De Papel’). But the second heist takes the cake. While season 3 and a portion of 4 followed a reasonably well-thought-out plan, season 5 takes a completely different direction.

Planned chaos is hardly a concern anymore. The Spanish police prove to be a formidable opponent for El Professor this time. This is evident in the action-packed and violent first five episodes. An uprising led by the familiar face of Arturo and a military intervention. The gang has never faced so much adversity during a heist. The first half is strategically released three months before the final episodes of the series. Smart move, as it ends in a massive cliffhanger that you need time to process and discuss.

As chaotic as the first half of the season is, the second half is not. It was previously announced that the fifth season would also be the last of “Money Heist”. So, answers had to come. And fear not, they do. The beautiful series that not only involved the heist but also tackled themes of romance and friendship gets a fitting conclusion.

La Casa De Papel season 6 is not happening

The end of the series means bidding farewell to characters like Tokyo, Rio, Denver, and Helsinki. There won’t be a sixth season. However, Netflix has announced a spin-off about Berlin, set to debut on the streaming service in 2023. It offers a glimpse into the life of the mastermind behind the heists and the brother of the gang’s leader, El Professor.

For those who can’t get enough of “La Casa”, a South Korean remake of the series is coming soon. After the success of Squid Game, you can’t ignore the South Korean offerings anymore. Will it be as internationally successful as Squid Game? Probably not. The familiar heists carried out by new faces in a different language. The originality that “Money Heist” had in Spanish is no longer there. So, fans will have to wait until 2023 when Berlin makes his appearance. But for now, the curtain has fallen on the gang. Bella ciao!
