Deadpool and Wolverine

He’s not a classic superhero, but he is beloved. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is getting a third film. In Deadpool and Wolverine, he teams up with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The result is a hilarious film with an incredible number of cameos and jabs at the producing studios. The story is a bit weak, but that doesn’t matter with such high entertainment value.

No one expected Hugh Jackman to don the grumpy mutant Wolverine’s skin again after Logan (2017). Especially since his character died in that last film. But when your friends Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy (the director) are working on a script, you want to join in.

With the help of Marvel’s multiverse, Wolverine joins the MCU. According to the story, this happens because only he can save Wade Wilson’s (Deadpool) universe from destruction. The two reluctantly join forces and embark on an entertaining adventure.

Joining the MCU

Deadpool and Wolverine references the Disney+ series Loki. Here, the Sacred Timeline and its TVA guardians are introduced. An apparently important plot point that keeps coming back in subsequent films and series. But no worries if you haven’t seen Loki. Everything is explained in Deadpool and Wolverine, so everyone can follow the film.

It’s also the debut for both superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And they make sure everyone knows it. Fox, the former studio of Deadpool 1 and 2, takes a lot of hits. But current producer Disney doesn’t escape unscathed either. With the entry into the MCU and continuation of existing storylines, Deadpool frequently mocks the recently flopped MCU films and series (Madame Web, The Marvels, and Secret Invasion). But with Deadpool and Wolverine, it seems the MCU finally delivers a hit again, thanks to the friendly trio Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy.

Surprises, Jokes, and a Weak Story

Opening the multiverse offers a wealth of possibilities. Thanks, Dr. Strange! From merging storylines to reintroducing beloved characters (welcome back, Wolverine). This is a spoiler-free review, so you’ll have to experience other surprises for yourself.

What isn’t a surprise is the presence of typical Deadpool humor. Even in Deadpool and Wolverine, Reynolds doesn’t hold back. From blunt jokes to choreographed fights, it’s all in there, and it’s good because it balances out a relatively weak story.

Although the two main characters aren’t friends, they’re not enemies either. The villains are played by Matthew Macfayden and Emma Corrin. Both play their roles strongly but are random choices for villains. The absence of an ultimate villain undermines the story. More than a gathering of superheroes won’t be remembered. Nonetheless, there are several good fight scenes that many fans will relish.

All in all, Reynolds, Levy, and the other producers have delivered a strong film. Extremely high entertainment value, CGI fights, and well-chosen music. The mix is perfect and makes up for the weaker points. It also helps that both Reynolds and Jackman step into the roles of their lives. No other actors can play these characters. For fans of Deadpool, Wolverine, Marvel, and superheroes, this is the film of the summer.
