Een break-up album waarin Swift de vijf fasen van rouw doorloopt. Het is een album \u201cdat ze moest schrijven\u201d, maar muzikaal niet altijd even verrassend. Toch is dit synthpop album een meer dan sterke toevoeging aan haar oeuvre.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Nee, Taylor Swift is niet de beste zangeres of danseres op aarde. Maar wat ze al van jongs af aan doet, is steengoede songteksten schrijven. Haar po\u00ebtische teksten worden met de jaren en met elk album beter. Niet gek dus dat ze zichzelf tot voorzitter van haar eigen po\u00ebzie afdeling heeft benoemd. Een titel die ze verdient. <em>The Tortured Poets Department<\/em> bestaat dan ook uit op muziek gezette gedichten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Voor een popartiest zet Swift een gedurfd album neer. Geen aanstekelijke refreinen, maar literaire teksten met verwijzingen naar haar recente (liefdes)leven. Zo ook op eerste single <em>Fortnight<\/em>, een samenwerking met Post Malone. Logische single aangezien dit een van de weinige nummers is die op de radio aan zal slaan. Zoveel Tiktok-potentie als dat voorganger <em>Midnights<\/em> had, zo weinig hitpotentie heeft <em>The Tortured Poets Department<\/em>. En dat werkt positief. Dit nieuwe album is hierdoor Taylor Swift-eigen geworden. De gevoeligheid van <em>Folklore<\/em> en <a href=\"https:\/\/popvaulture.com\/nl\/music\/album-review\/taylor-swift-evermore\/\" target=\"_self\"><em>Evermore<\/em><\/a> met de synthpop van <em>Midnights<\/em>. Geen poespas of tierelantijntjes. Gewoon van haar af schrijven en zingen wat haar op het hart lag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Niet alleen Post Malone heeft een feature op dit album. Ook Florence Welch van Florence + The\nMachine is aanwezig. Het achtste nummer <em>Florida!!!<\/em> spat van het album. De drums die het refrein bijstaan maken dit een sterk anthem over een ontsnapping aan problemen. Florida is namelijk de locatie waar Swift op dat moment met haar Eras Tour optrad terwijl haar break-up met Joe Alwyn bekend werd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Break-up album over recente exen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alhoewel Swift onder andere bekend is om het zingen over haar exen, is dat onderwerp al zo\u2019n tien jaar niet tot nauwelijks in haar oeuvre voorgekomen. Dit komt vooral omdat ze gedurende deze tijd een zes jaar lange relatie had met Britse acteur Joe Alwyn. Nu deze relatie voorbij is, werd gevreesd voor een album waarin deze werd blootgelegd. En dan met name het einde van de relatie. Maar dat valt allemaal reuze mee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Natuurlijk bezingt Swift haar \"<em>London Boy<\/em>\" op onder andere <em>So Long, London<\/em> en <em>loml<\/em>. Maar de heftige kortstondige relatie met The 1975-zanger Matty Healy, die op Alwyn volgde, komt er slechter vanaf. Dit was een relatie die door iedereen werd afgekeurd, behalve door Swift, zoals bezongen op <em>But Daddy I Love Him<\/em>. Maar op <em>I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)<\/em> krijgt Swift door dat Healy niet meer te redden is. Zelfs niet door haar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Het tekent de na\u00efviteit van Swift die gedurende dit album vaker terugkomt. Maar ze haalt hier ook haar voordeel uit. Zowel Alwyn als Healy hebben haar niet altijd goed behandeld, als we haar teksten goed interpreteren. Hier leert ze van. Iemand die zegt dat zij de \u201clove of my life\u201d is, maar het niet aandurft om in het openbaar samen te verschijnen of een ring om haar vinger te doen, is eerder de \u201closs of her life\u201d. Want dat is waar <em>loml<\/em> echt voor staat bij Swift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Dit soort tekstuele slimmigheden komen vaker voor op <em>The Tortured Poets Department<\/em>. Hiermee haalt ze niet alleen zichzelf door het slijk, maar maakt ze ook grappen richting de luisteraar: \u201cI\u2019m having his baby; No, I\u2019m not, but you should see your faces\u201d. Een kunst die niet voor veel songwriters is weggelegd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Met recht een 'Tortured Poet'<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Dat Taylor Swift een van de meest bekende personen ter wereld is, is duidelijk. Al sinds haar debuutalbum <em>Taylor Swift<\/em> uit 2006 wordt ze nauwlettend gevolgd door de media. En dan vooral als het op haar relaties aankomt. En deze media is sinds die tijd alleen maar meer aanwezig door de groei van online en sociale media. Echt schuilen en een break-up verwerken is er niet bij als artiest van deze grote. En zeker niet als je gelijktijdig met een wereldtournee bezig bent en elke week op het grootste podium staat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Dat is precies wat Swift bezingt in <em>I Can Do It With a Broken Heart<\/em>. Een melancholisch nummer waarin ze bezingt dat ze haar mentale problemen opzij moest zetten, omdat de spotlight op haar gericht was. Er was geen tijd om haarzelf slecht te voelen. \u201cThe show must go on\u201d. Een vals-vrolijk nummer dat erg slim ingericht is met dank aan producer Jack Antonoff. Ditzelfde verteld slotnummer <em>Clara Bow<\/em>, over een actrice in stomme films van de jaren 1920 die met mentale problemen kampte. Een terechte vergelijking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><em>The Tortured Poets Department<\/em> is een album over een jaar uit het leven van Taylor Swift. Van de break-up met Joe Alwyn, de kortstondige relatie met Matty Healy, haar Eras Tour, op <em>The Tortured Poets Department: The Alchemy<\/em> de bloeiende relatie met American footballspeler Travis Kelce en haar mentale problemen die zich tussendoor afspelen. Genoeg inspiratie voor dit album. En dat is ook precies de reden waarom Swift een bonus versie van <em>The Tortured Poets Department<\/em> heeft uitgebracht. Op <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/5H7ixXZfsNMGbIE5OBSpcb?si=ZBT-IbZ2RNasAzBpoNxtzQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Anthology<\/a><\/em> staan maar liefst 15 bonus nummers. Dit dubbelalbum zal door menig fan grijsgedraaid worden.
