The Mandalorian – Season 2

The second season of one of Disney+’s flagship shows is once again a success. Creators and showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have written a great story and executed it exceptionally well. They take viewers on another journey with The Mandalorian to a galaxy far, far away.

The science-fiction Western revolves around the new mission of a bounty hunter, the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal). His mission? To return ‘The Child’ (aka Baby Yoda) to its own kind. Baby Yoda is not the Yoda we know from the films, but they do belong to the same alien species.

In the first season, it was revealed that Baby Yoda is connected to The Force and is most likely a Jedi. These powers also make him highly sought after by the Empire under the leadership of Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito). The only way to keep The Child safe is to reunite him with other Jedi. This is what season 2 is all about.

After an introductory episode, somewhat disconnected from the main story, this second season really kicks off. New planets, new creatures, old acquaintances, all come into play and more! Both old and young Star Wars fans will enjoy this series. But even if you’re not familiar with the entire Star Wars universe, this series is truly a gem.

In line with the current trend in Hollywood, there are powerful scenes featuring multiple female characters. Female mercenary Cara Dune (Gina Carano) was introduced in the first season. In this second season, she is joined by other female soldiers (about whom I won’t spread spoilers). Several fight scenes are executed exceptionally well and do not feel forced. This is a huge success factor for this season.

Star Wars and Disney

After Disney and Lucasfilm’s collaboration for the Star Wars sequel trilogy received quite a bit of criticism, the success of The Mandalorian is very welcome for both parties. Also for the streaming service it appears on. It is the first Disney+ original series to attract a huge audience to the streaming service. Now it’s up to Disney to follow up this successful second season of The Mandalorian with more originals to prevent another exodus of subscribers. After the news that The Mandalorian is also the most illegally downloaded series this year, it will be quite a challenge for Disney+. Fortunately, 2021 is already packed with new Disney+ originals, including two series featuring popular Star Wars characters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett. The latter also contributes to this second season, but I won’t give away any more spoilers.

Together with various directors, many of whom also directed an episode in season 1, Disney, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni have once again succeeded in delivering a top-notch season. With both an open and closed ending, viewers are left curious about the continuation. The third season has already been announced, but whether it will be available in 2021 remains unclear.

The stoic Mandalorian who is forced to care for a young child and together they form a deep bond turns out to be a success story. Combined with the Western style, it’s a winning formula that makes you forget the earlier criticism of Disney’s Star Wars. Yes, Disney, this is how you make a top series for new and old fans. This is the way!
