Wednesday – Season 2

After a strong first season, Wednesday returns after three years with a second instalment. The series, based on the Addams Family, once again impresses thanks to a solid storyline, an excellent cast, and top-notch sets. Tim Burton and his writers have maintained the high standard.

While viewers had to wait three years for a follow-up, for Wednesday Addams, only a summer holiday has passed. She spent that time tracking down murderers with her paranormal abilities. However, those abilities come under pressure.

Meanwhile, plenty happens during this second year at Nevermore. Enid is part of a werewolf pack, Pugsley also enrols at the school and finds a new ‘pet’, Morticia Addams is asked to organise the gala and secure sponsors, and all the while, more murders occur than Wednesday can solve. It’s a packed season!

Changes

Despite the short time between the events of seasons 1 and 2, much has changed, particularly within the cast. Several characters from the first season are less prominent or have been written out entirely. On the other hand, the cast has been bolstered with additions such as Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley and Evie Templeton, bringing fresh dynamics and intriguing new characters.

But these aren’t the only notable additions. Haley Joel Osment and Lady Gaga also make cameo appearances as outcast icons. Lady Gaga has even contributed an original track to the series, which features in episode 7: Dead Dance. That said, these big names could have been utilised better, especially Lady Gaga. Despite the extensive build-up, her role is limited to a brief cameo, which feels like a missed opportunity.

What shines through once again is the signature Burton-esque atmosphere that defines the series. The gothic sets, misty forests, and striking colour contrasts give this second season a slightly darker tone than the first. The humour and dialogue remain lighthearted at times. Whereas season 1 often teetered between teen drama and mystery, season 2 feels more mature and consistent in style.

Compelling leads

Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) and Emma Myers (Enid) once again deliver convincing performances. Both young actresses already have impressive credits to their names, yet they surpass expectations this season, particularly in episode six.

And they are not the only ones shining. Established names such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gwendoline Christie and Steve Buscemi are expected to give strong performances, and thankfully, they do. It’s also a welcome change that Zeta-Jones, as Morticia, has a more prominent role than in the first season. The mother-daughter relationship between her and Wednesday, as well as her own relationship with her mother, provides an engaging dynamic that enriches the story. While episodes in the first season sometimes felt somewhat disjointed, season 2 feels tighter and more cohesive thanks to these new relationships.

That said, the season does have a downside: the abundance of storylines and subplots can make the narrative feel slightly chaotic. New mysteries, characters, and family intrigues pile up, meaning not every development gets the attention it deserves. One moment you’re following a gripping murder case with Wednesday, the next you’re amidst Enid’s pack problems or Pugsley’s latest adventures. The pace remains high, but the series occasionally feels less focused and less thrilling than the first season.

What to expect in Wednesday Season 3?

According to Netflix data, the first season is the most-watched English-language series to date. While it’s still uncertain, there’s a strong chance that this second season will reach similar viewership numbers. Netflix has done everything possible to rebuild the hype, from a two-part release of four episodes each, to a worldwide press tour with the lead cast and pop-up experiences across the globe. Fortunately, it does not disappoint.

Even before the first part of season 2 was released, a third season of Wednesday had already been greenlit. Its release date remains unclear, and it’s unlikely to arrive quickly. Most probably, the next chapter of Wednesday Addams at Nevermore Academy will not arrive until early 2027.

Season 2 of Wednesday lives up to the high expectations. The new characters add real value, and the dynamic between Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers elevates the series. At times, the multiple storylines can make it feel a little crowded, but overall enthusiasm prevails: it remains a darkly delightful, funny, and stylish series that sweeps you along effortlessly. With a third season on the horizon, it will be particularly intriguing to see how the creators maintain this high standard.
